Caney Mountain Hunting Locations for Wheelchairs

Written By: andrew - Aug• 24•11

After driving through Caney Mountain Conservation Area in Ozark County, Missouri; I picked out some hotspots for disabled hunters for the fall managed hunts for deer. The food plots are growing good and finding a half-level ground area for wheelchairs took awhile. Recommended places for blinds would be near the following.

#5 as seen in the pictures. Good long field for a rifle and a back area for bows / crossbows. My thoughts were to park before or after it and wheel along the edge of the field. The woods on both sides have 50 yards of sight with the leaves on in certain areas.

#6 Food Plot also has a level area with a good view. It has not been planted yet but between easy road side access and the drop offs on each side you can get quite the view of the plot and wooded area.

#20-21 is a very good looking spot for getting the best view for up to 200 yards. Located on Longs Bald the hill comes down and there is a spot to park. Open tree area (you can see very well) in the south-east direction with the food plots below you. Also nearly anywhere in that location would be a good place to be able to "wheel in". I think its more of a muzzleloader area than bow but not if you can find the right spot.

#24 going behind the plot could be done and also have good viewing. From parking to sitting my GPS said 220 yards. Not recommended if the ground is soft from rain.

Almost any of the #20-#30 plots are a good option. Each has a downfall torwards wheelchairs but they are very promising spots that you must see in person.

Other areas of interest;

#2 Corn area with some accessibility. 30-50 yard shooting; Beside road.

#3 can be accessed but limited to low stance sitting.

#7 is a another area but hugs the road and limited on terrain.

#8 is back in a hollow which looked good from the road but I didn't go back into it but there is a road leading back that looked chair friendly.

#9 long and next to the road.

#11 is in a hollow and looks promising. Chairs couldn't get to far from the road though.

#12 gives a 100 yard shot but right on the road.

#25 limited sight but good possiblities.

#28 is a long shooting area. Fairly accessible.

#29 is a long shooting area.

#30 gives 100 yards of shooting area and accessibility.

#33 is by the road but looked accessible with minor adjustments.

All of these are recommendations only. Do not just show up expecting a perfect trail for a wheelchair. Visit Caney Mountain and look around yourself. Almost guaranteed to see lots of wildlife and some nice views of the ozarks. There is 7,899 Acres to cover so pack a lunch. Trails are marked that 4×4 vehicles are recommended. I will be heading back with another person where I can go further off-road without getting hung-up.
